Teacher friends: our world has been flipped upside down & we’re a tad busy 🙃🤪 If you’re using Zoom to connect with Ss, go through your settings! It takes some time. Here’s my cheat sheet to get you started (but be sure to check out Zoom’s resources too). We got this! 🙌🤓🎥

I used to teach high school. Now I teach college freshman. High school teachers, PLEASE stop saying "I don't like the 5-paragraph essay, but the students need it for college." They don't. They really, really, don't. I promise!!

You're not grading assignments. You're collecting evidence to determine student progress and pointing them towards their next steps. Make the mental switch. It matters.

“Teachers shouldn’t assume that students will pick up the language just by being in a predominantly English-speaking school — truly, that’s just “English noise” for many of those students!” AMENNNN! Make sure to watch the video on the Reading Rope too.

Today's tiny teaching tip (15): When explaining tricky concepts, decide in advance what language you are going to use to label something, and then be consistent.

Pics to show what instruction aligned w/ the science of reading *really* looks like (because Balanced Literacy doesn't have a monopoly on joy) #SOR is not reading from a basal It’s kids cuddled up on beanbags enjoying a good book together because they have been *taught* to read

We are brain 🧠 changers "with our instructional choices" as Judi Dodson said. Orthographic mapping is the process "the formation of letter-sound connections to bond the spellings, pronunciations & meanings of specific words in memory." Reading Rockets This is a great activity!

📌Use plates + toys for sound mapping: 1. I say the word & they repeat it back to me. 2. They slowly segment the word + show how many sounds they hear with the toys. 3. They graph it in the top spot. 4. Print it in the bottom spot. 5. Read it. 6. REPEAT! #literacy #edutwitter
