In case you missed it. Listening insightful takes on distributed systems from Leslie Lamport made my day yesterday. Also go #tlaplus changelog.com/person/lamport

Nice post. Hacking on databases and programming language standard libraries (especially containers and string routines), and trying to beat your own perf on benchmarks w/ ever larger data, is a great way to learn a lot of CS. More fun than leetcode too! davidgomes.com/the-broad-set-…

Ryan Marcus One could have said that of Yahoo and Hadoop. History from google, amazon, etc suggests that once a superscalar tries to actually support 3rd-party customers they find their way to deeper data tech (and often abandon open source).

If you’re attending CIDR 2025, check out Tamer Eldeeb’s talk today on Chablis, a geo-distributed strictly-serializable database that offers low-latency single-region read-write transactions and global snapshot reads. For more details check out our paper (cidrdb.org/cidr2024/paper…)

It’s great to see low-latency messaging libraries finally target public clouds. We also have a low-latency DPDK messaging library for cloud VMs, open-sourced at github.com/microsoft/mach…. It gets 750k RPCs/s with 61us p99.9 latency on Azure (no VM placement tuning), with one core.

I have never put napkin math as much to the practise as with building turbopuffer github.com/sirupsen/napki… I have this tab open all the time, doing the calculations in Raycast which has phenomenal unit support Profiles and observability will never tell you the lower bound

Just learned that our paper "Practical Considerations for Implementing State Machine Replication in the Cloud" was accepted to ICDCS'25. This work is a substantial rehash and extension of something that was in my eternal rejection pile for a few years now: charap.co/pile-of-eterna…

HoliPaxos! After a revision process, I just received a VLDB acceptance for our new Paxos paper: "HoliPaxos: Towards More Predictable Performance in State Machine Replication" I love conferences that work with authors to improve papers instead of rejecting outright.
