That means for a tiny improvement in model performance you need a ton more data & the performance of the models is largely based on the pretraining data containing similar data points to the test data. Meaning these are lookup tables, they don't generalize.

This is a knock out punch to the approach of training ever larger models in the hope they will improve massively over the smaller ones. The exponential demand for data to gain miniscule performance is a roadblock, literally deep learning hitting a wall as Gary Marcus predicted.
