Hungary has announced that they plan to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, just hours after PM Orbán rolled out the red carpet for Israeli PM Netanyahu. Netanyahu should have been arrested as soon as he stepped onto European soil. No one is above the law.

International criminal justice requires impartial and independent courts. In defying the arrest warrant of the ICC, Prime Minister Orban not only undermines the Court, but the rule of law. Iceland remains deeply committed to the fight against impunity.

US sanctions targeting the ICC are an affront to victims. Most EU member states have condemned the sanctions but🇪🇺 as a whole has yet to express its opposition in an official statement. Several EU states have also apparently failed to or said they wouldn't uphold ICC obligations.

To overcome these threats the EU should: • Condemn US sanctions on the ICC • Activate the Blocking Statute • Remind member states of their legal obligations to cooperate w/the ICC ⏰Time take decisive action to reaffirm commitment & protection of the international rule-of-law

Int'l Criminal Court is a major justice pathway for 🇺🇦. the Court issued 4 arrest warrants re: attacks on civilian objects, specifically – on critical infrastructure in the end of `22 - early `23. Yet it is hard to expect the scope to expand, when the Court faces existential threats

The #EU must adopt a @BlockingStatute to protect the #ICC from US sanctions, and react decisively to growing instances of EU member states questioning or directly undermining the ICC legitimacy through acts of non-cooperation.
