This week’s Place of the Week is Kirkandrews Moat Quarter in North #Cumbria The name derives from ‘Church of St Andrew’, with ‘Kirk’ coming from old norse for church, and the Latin ‘moat’ meaning mound. See bellow and find out more at… cumbriacountyhistory.org.uk/township/kirka…

This week’s Image of the Week follows this week’s theme of the Cumbrian Scottish border. The church of St Andrew in Kirkandrews was rebuilt 1775 by Dr Robert Graham of Netherby. There had previously been a medieval chapel on the site ⛪️

Æthelred II, king of the English, died #OTD in 1016. He laid waste to ‘Cumberland’ in 1000, and in 1002 ordered the deaths of all Danish men within his realm – an event that became known as the St Brice’s Day massacre.
