What looks like a bee but is actually a fly? A bee-fly of course :) Just caught this one in flight in my back garden after coming back from unsuccessful insect hunt ironically 1st macro of the year from being back in the UK...

During fieldwork in Tasmania earlier this year, found this velvet worm, Tasmanipatus barretti, in one of the best woodpiles I've ever looked through. Seems a little shy. A rare species, listed as vulnerable. With permit. What a pleasure seeing this. Northeastern Tasmania

Pyralidae moth. I just found out, that some lepidoptera had ocelli, too. (The small black dot behind the compound eye) I didn’t know that 🤯 This is why i love macrophotography. #Pyralidae #moth #zünsler #motte #lepidoptera #nachtfalter #entomology

Meet Australia's most recently named and described longhorn beetle: Excastra albopilosa! I was lucky enough to discover this remarkable species while camping binnaburra in 2021. Have a read of the UQ News article for more detail and a link to the paper. #entomology #newspecies

Observing a few moths. Documented almost 600 species over 4 nights, excluding other invertebrates that I spent time with. Meshed jacket was to prevent the moths from getting into my eyes, nose and ears.
