Some next-level phrasing to avoid the pesky new(ish) FT style guide decree that "data is" and not "data are"? "Buttressing their data are some humdinger anecdata" Tim Harford #MoreOrLess BBC More or Less

Frustrated at my own mental biases re #ChatGPT. When I know about or can work out the correct answer, I can easily/often get ChatGPT to a point where it is making specific detailed mistakes. However, on subject where I don't know the answer, I am happy to take it at face value.

Found this chat-over-lunch w/Ted Chiang very interesting (He's written collections of awesome short scifi stories, including what became the film Arrival).

Blimey. That was intense. The Romans did not mess about when it came to Carthage. Have been snacking on this enormous Fall of Civilizations episode for weeks - the tension never dropped. (even though you kinda know it is not going to end well for whoever's name is in the title...)

Enjoyed, and was humbled by, the magnitude of effort, the sense of mission, the depth and clarity in the initial design that means this is all possible 40+ years later, as NASA JPL tech support does live brain surgery on Voyager 1 a light day away. youtube.com/watch?v=_ZRGYO…

Some thoughts: "Mind the (AI) Gap", or, "What can AI do for my business, that isn't just a chatbot?" Because, why not write something that is overtaken by events within minutes? (Medium) medium.com/@cgathercole_5… (LinkedIn) linkedin.com/pulse/mind-ai-… #llm #ai #productstrategy

TIL, "Considered harmful" is a part of a phrasal template "X considered harmful". Well, I knew that already. But that it is a "snowclone" that can be used and recognised in multiple variants as with Inuit words for snow. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Considere… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowclone

I'm late to this party. Blimey. This interview (and others) is powerful stuff. Gary Stevenson is like a financial (and rather cross) Cassandra, or perhaps the Ghost of Economy Future? The simple reframing of what is actually going on in the real economy is very hard to unsee.

Way back in 2019, I wrote up notes on how this #ModularOrigami beast was created using post-its, stories.upthebuzzard.com/fragments/2019…. Years passed. Just checked today, and ... link rot! Tom Hull and his PHIZZ unit had moved! Updated post. All is well.

Updated the #CreativeCommons license on my (pre-LLM) writings (stories.upthebuzzard.com/predicting_the…) from CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 to CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc…). Not an expert, but surely wholesale grabbing of such CC-ed stories as LLM training data by OpenAI et al breaks those Ts&Cs?

Very much enjoyed this melancholic series. A sly, wit-infused, bromance-powered stroll through the royally-inbred rooms of power of early 1900s Europe, towards the inevitable carnage of WW1. Captivating, sad, light but dark, humorous but the pathos looms large. Would recommend.
