The one useful thing we learned was how Twitter defines engagement. But that wasn't actually part of the source and was published separately! This type of transparency about how algorithms are configured should be considered essential, and doesn't require release of source code.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Don't do this - human rights defenders already have images and videos undermined - don't contribute to it by utilizing AI-generated imagery in this way. Yes, there will be ways to use AI-generated imagery for advocacy - this is not it.

I'm not arguing w the fact that AI poses risks. I AM ceaselessly annoyed by the pattern This is not new or novel. It was women - @timnitGebru (@dair-community.social/bsky.social) MMitchell, me, et al - who rang the AI alarm years ago & were retaliated against, pushed out for doing so. nytimes.com/2023/05/01/tec…

Google’s vision for the future of search shows how generative AI is all about increasing corporate power. Instead of sending you to different websites, Google has scraped the open web to generate plagiarized answers to keep you looking at ads on Google. disconnect.blog/p/google-wants…

We talk a lot about how AI is biased but don’t often get to really see it in a meaningful way. This in-depth piece from Dina Bass and Leonardo is a fantastic way in to the ways in which generative AI (in this case Stability AI Stable Diffusion) is biased). Check it out!

I made a new zine all about how ICT climate politics look productively different if we focus less on green consumer behaviours and more on opposing infrastructure expansions. It's quite fun, and written with a non-academic audience in mind! emmlab.info/Resources_page…

AI bros seem to be misunderstanding the point of Nightshade. No, we aren’t trying to somehow stuff poison in your AI model datasets ourselves. We poison our own work. And if YOU choose to scrape our work, YOU poison your own dataset. It’s a retaliation to you offending first.

Can’t believe it, but Silicon Valley Imperialism is a real book! There are tons of people to thank for helping make it happen, including Alex Horghidan for the brilliant cover art, and so many others. Extra thanks to @lizault for guiding the entire process dukeupress.edu/silicon-valley…
