90 years ago, the Soviet regime killed 7 million Ukrainians in a genocide called Holodomor. They were mostly from villages. My great-grandmother survived, but two of my great-granddads died. Here is the work of Malevich dedicated to Holodomor. Thread of 🇺🇦 art and Holodomor.🧵

Now I'm reading Anne Applebaum "Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine" about Holodomor. Here is the work of Ivan Padalka "Harvesting of Tomatoes". It was made in 1932 during Holodomor. Imagine: making this picture while peasants are dying from hunger.

Tomorrow is the remembrance day of the Holodomor (1932-1933), genocide of Ukrainians. Remember two amazing artists who didn't survive famine – Evmen Pshechenko and Vasyl Dovhoshiya. We don't know how many exactly artists from villages died during Holodomor.

Today I'm thinking about the collectivization and Holodomor in Ukraine, when people were forced to work for free in the collective farms. First, they refused, so soviets decided to take everything from peasants and made them starve, so they had to work for food.

“Blue boy, Holodomor” by Alla Horska. It was forbidden for a very long time to talk about Holodomor. I don’t know full story about my family that survived it in Kyiv and Vinnytsya regions. Many artists reflected on this tragedy. It is essential to remember the genocide.

Today, I have the mood to post old Ukrainian carpets (kylymy) from various parts of Ukraine, made in the 19th century (first two from 1803). Look at these marvellous details! I hope they inspire you today. All of them from the National Museum of Decorative Art of Ukraine

For the memory of my great grandfathers Ivan and Vasyl, who died during Holodomor, and for everyone who didn’t survive the famine. We remember. Every year I put the candle on the window wherever I am.
