OK, many good points here but also some to take up: namely that no one can say what or who university is for. I think we can, & we should be saying it's for as wide a group as possible. No humanities study as a privilege only for the well-off. No pricing prospective students out

This. Universities in deprived areas, those we tend not to hear much about, are the reason many students can go to university at all. When courses are cut at those universities, or if they go bust, students won’t go elsewhere, they just won’t go to university.
