In 1992, 2 obstetricians at St Thomas’ Hospital wanted to know more about preterm birth. With 1 of their patients, they started a campaign to raise money for pregnancy research. This grew into Tommy’s, named after the hospital where it all began. #InternationalDayofCharity

To celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (Feb 11th), this week we are going to highlight some of the fantastic women who work for our department. Through clinical work, teaching, research, and/or outreach, these women inspire us every day #WomenInScience

Our first highlight is Dr Carolyn Jones (Carolyn Jones). Since starting her PhD in 1973, she has written over 240 peer-reviewed papers and 21 chapters and is still contributing to science into her retirement! Remarkably, Carolyn also developed the reproductive glycogenetics field.

Today we are highlighting Olivia Jones who won the Professor Sir Robert Boyd prize! Olivia was the highest-performing MRes Reproduction and Pregnancy student (2021-2022), and was supervised by Dr Mark Dilworth! We are lucky to have motivated and talented MRes students each year.

We cannot forget our research technicians! One example is the fantastic Mazie Gatt, who uses placenta perfusion to investigate drug transfer across the placenta. She was awarded the Tommy's bursary for her masters in 2021, and has raised over £1000 for Tommy's via charity runs!
