If designed in a wholistic and substantive way, cycling infrastructure can be more than just transporting people from A to B. It can be used as an effective tool in the fight against climate change; improving carbon absorption, heat mitigation, rain retention, and bio-diversity.

In Dutch cities and towns, one of the features that first stands out to international visitors is the use of the continuous cycle path. Rather than treating humans as guests in the car space, the opposite occurs, and the cycle path is seamless by design. bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2022/06/29/ext…

That separated, protected lane ABSOLUTELY fights #ClimateChange. And air pollution. And inequality. And preventable diseases. And public health cost increases. And cost of living increases. And tax increases. And it supports economic devt & allows more trips in a lot less space.

The Hovenring is Eindhoven's spectacular circular cycling bridge. The cable-stayed bridge offers an exciting crossover. With its impressive pylon, 72 metre diameter, thin deck and conspicuous lighting, the suspended roundabout is a landmark for the city. dutchcycling.nl/knowledge/down…

You can tell a lot about a city's priorities by the timing of its traffic signals. At many intersections in Delft, pedestrians and cyclists have a continuous green light, and a sensor periodically allows drivers to cross the foot and cycle path. Design for the traffic you want.

Ask a Dutch person why they cycle so much, and they’ll shrug: “It’s just in our culture”; unaware of the vast infrastructure investments that make it so easy. Ask an American why they drive so much, and they’ll do the same. First we shape our streets; then our streets shape us.

For years, Ocean Drive was a popular place for drivers to cruise up and down the Miami Beach waterfront. All of that changed with the pandemic, when a pilot scheme sparked a new vision for a human-scale promenade; opening a path to permanent pedestrianization in the near future.
