My new op-ed in Santa Monica Next ✍️ My state legislators Ben Allen & Rick Chavez Zbur built careers as environmental leaders. But by siding with NIMBYs against SB 79—the biggest housing + climate bill of the decade—they'll throw away their legacy. Full piece below⬇️

California has a massive housing crisis. SB79 is a bill that will permit and streamline construction of more housing around transit stops, in some cases overriding local rules and objections. Senator Scott Wiener is the bill's author. LA City Council Member Imelda Padilla opposes it.

This mindset in city council is why we have a housing crisis. We desperately need new leaders who will rise to the occasion and help LA become a leader in solving this crisis. That’s why I’m running

On her website, Councilmember Imelda Padilla for LA City Council District 6’s priorities include addressing homelessness and the affordability crisis, which is clearly accomplished by reducing the number of homes built in an 100% affordable housing project.

Weird times we’re living in where a candidate to the right of TraciParkforLA has better housing policies than the sitting Democratic Assemblymember in this seat.

In the CA State Senate race to represent the Westside of LA only John Erickson raised his hand to say he would support #SB79 which would legalize homes near transit. This is what leadership looks like.

Putting action behind words, LA City Council Candidate Jon Rawlings 4 LA City Council just painted some guerrilla crosswalks in front of a preschool because the city was taking too long. My kind of politician. We’re not waiting to make our communities a better place.

Want to know why there’s so few young leaders in the Democratic party? Because the people in office have been there for the past 30+ years, leaving no opportunity for young folks to ascend into bigger positions. Ed Markey is a champion, but we need to look to the future.

Gavin Newsom has been California’s best housing governor ever -- SB 79 will make or break that legacy. ✍️ SIGN SB 79 IN FULL ✍️

I like that Porter is warming up to YIMBYism but this is so yikes on so many levels. Quality of character does matter, and this + other stories do not bode well for her leadership capabilities. How can you be effective when you alienate potential allies?
