My epiphany from this? Bioinformatics is not just cool algorithms. The platform we built influenced public health in our country. We affected real people. We could only do that because we could effectively use our data. In the end, it comes down to knowing where your files are.

Firstly, we are academics and clinicians working alongside very high-end, professional software developers. And our developers are not an external service or bureau receiving instructions. They are a *core part of the intellectually creative research team*.
