My TED Talks is now online.

I argue that we have the opportunity to build a world where we can all live well, and tackle our environmental problems at the same time.

This is possible, but not inevitable. We have to push to make that a reality.

When talking about things like GDP per capita, CO2 emissions, the share of people connected to the Internet, or banana consumption, what's the word that best describes all of these things?

Drink diet.

I’ve never thought “drink water only” is reasonable advice, because water is boring and soda is not. Calorie-free sweeteners are a safe and reasonable substitution.

Onshore wind farms are popular in the UK.

Most people support building more of them.

This is true across political lines.

Some people are asking what the global median income is.
According to the same source it is $7.56 per day.
This means that half the world lives on less than that.

I rarely hear anything about acid rain these days.

But it was once the environmental issue of-the-day.

In the latest issue of Works in Progress, I look at how we stopped it: worksinprogress.co/issue/the-end-…

Some statistics are worth knowing by heart:

The average – mean – income in the world per person is $18 per day.

This is adjusted for differences in price levels.

It means that if incomes could get perfectly equally distributed in the world all of us would live on $18 per day.

A majority (55%) of Americans are now worried at least somewhat that AI could one day pose a risk to the human race’s existence.

Every 4th person is very worried.

There is a persistent myth of 'the happy poor'. It's just that: a myth.

While happiness and life satisfaction are of course driven by many other things as well, people in poor countries are on average much more unhappy. Economic growth matters.

A visualization of today's global inequality:

The average income in the Netherlands is 70-times higher than in Burundi (differences in prices are taken into account).

And compared with the Netherlands a mother in Burundi is 450-times more likely to die during child birth.

Great to see the interest in this. I think it is important to see that green growth is possible.

Especially because some powerful groups were always claiming the opposite: that decoupling isn’t possible, that addressing climate change will necessarily mean that we become poorer.

The change in the world population is determined by 2 metrics: the number of babies born & the number of people dying

Toward the end of this century, the number of deaths is projected to surpass that of births, bringing global population growth to an end
