The reason many disabled people lose PIP or DLA when they start work is because DWP and their assessors automatically assume a person who can work can't be disabled enough for disability benefits. Getting rid of this prejudice would be transformative.

We all have an interest in a system that is there when we need it most. Instead of scapegoating and blaming vulnerable groups, the Government should address the underlying causes of ill-health and invest in our social and physical infrastructure. theguardian.com/society/2024/a…

The government has forgotten that disability benefits are a good thing. They help disabled people to live full, happy lives. We should be proud as a country of having a system in place that provides disabled people with a safety net, not demonising those who need to use it.

Let’s remember this is a situation that was entirely overlooked at the start of the pandemic, largely dismissed & ignored in the middle of it, and now treated as if the cause is historical & not ongoing.

So, yeah, it’s a public health failure.

Just to be clear, the ‘vouchers instead of cash’ plan is really only about embedding the message that disabled people are wastrels, undeserving scroungers, who would probably spend their cash on drink and cigarettes.

The message is the point.

Disability benefit cuts that are expected to affect more than 450,000 people by 2029 will only lead to 15,400 more people finding paid work, according to official forecasts

That's about three percent of the number of people affected.

Dear Mel Stride,

PIP has nothing to do with employment.

PIP is for moderate to severe disability and is v difficult to qualify for.

Noone gets PIP 'for' depression or anxiety. It is based on a functional analysis.

Stop playing smoke and mirrors with people's lives.

The stated purpose of disability benefits is to compensate disabled people for the inevitable extra cost *of being disabled*. It's not intended to pay for medical treatment or routine living costs - we have the NHS and income-related benefits for that. 🧵theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

🙄

We are indeed ‘after’ Covid closures.

They happened 3-4 years ago and lasted ~5 months combined. We were in the 1st year of the pandemic. 000s per week were dying. 1/

The proper question for Philp would’ve been how can you not know the risks facing Congolese refugees in Rwanda, a country you’ve just decreed ‘safe’ for all refugees, when 13 were executed a few years ago?

The Department for Work and Pensions appears to have destroyed all written records that would have shown why it weakened guidance on when to investigate suicides of benefit claimants.

Sickening and pointless. This is the deliberate use of cruelty against vulnerable people, all for political pointscoring. These ghouls have absolutely no humanity. They just see asylum seekers as pawns in their twisted little games.
