When Dutch cities started removing cars from their streets and plazas in the 1990s, critics argued, “We’re not the Mediterranean!” At the time, their country didn’t have the walking and terrace culture of Spain, France, and Italy; due to its harsh climate. They certainly do now.

We don’t call people who drive to work every day “keen motorists”. We don’t think everyone with shoes speaks and acts on behalf of the “walking community”. We don’t expect transit users to lobby for safe and expedient travel. So why is it different for anyone who rides a bike?

The most important thing about this amazing Paris transformation is how fast it happened — how fast people on bikes “appeared” — once streets were transformed. You can’t write this off as “Paris was always this way,” because it wasn’t. It took leadership.

Some cities think if another city is building a network of safe, separated bike-lanes, it MUST be because bike-lanes “just aren’t as controversial in THAT city.” But in my experience, smart action is due to the PRESENCE of political will, not the ABSENCE of political controversy.

"It's not my duty as Mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. For me it's the same as if you bought a cow, or a refrigerator, and then asked me where you're going to put them." ~Miguel Anxo F. Lores, Mayor of Pontevedra, Spain.

This lady and her amazing team at Yorkshire Children's Charity once again showed us what good looks like at the Yorkshire Property Awards last night. A true force of nature who is changing the lives of children who so desperately need it. You guys are an absolute inspiration. 🙌

Had a lovely time in York but I’m left wondering how the businesses manage without all the “passing trade” from motor traffic and without on-street parking outside…

Good to see plans have gone in for Frasers’ head office relocation to the WM ✅ An all new HQ in Ansty, which’ll create up to 7.5k jobs - a clear vote of confidence in the WM 📈 I’m in lockstep with CEO Michael Murray to help maximise the benefits this will bring to the WM 👍🏻
