Congratulations to Chris Lloyd on the publication of Paris Requiem, the latest in the award winning Eddie Giral series. Out now where all good books are sold!

Reading his novels as a young writer was a game changer for me. That trademark marriage of style and story. London Fields and Money, especially Money, the standouts. RIP Martin Amis.

The work of Cormac McCarthy has touched, moved and inspired me more than that of anyone else. He’s the only author I have read completely, every word, carried on that great tide of sentences which flow and roar then shatter on the rocks. He was a giant, and will be missed. RIP.

I wrote an obituary for my literary father, Cormac McCarthy for @Spectator. Cormac McCarthy is gone — but his works remain brilliantly alive thespectator.com/book-and-art/c…

Dear writers: Send that email. Write that story. Edit mercilessly. Ignore the haters. Stay humble, but be confident. Get paid. Read everything. Write despite your insecurity. Support others. Accept helpful criticism. Celebrate everything. Don't panic. Never quit. You got this.

Damn it! The “Year of the Pauls” and I don’t have a book out! Congratulations to all shortlisted, particularly Paul Lynch - we once shared a stage Edinburgh International Book Festival and he was a bloody nice bloke. V fine writer too. Looking forward to reading them all.

At a certain point of the writing process you’re so invested that the real world melts away and the work becomes all encompassing. Drifting like ghost through your days, as the book plays on a loop in your head…and it’s wonderful, because it means the thing is ALIVE!
