In some ways, this isn’t surprising. - At a micro level, nothing about how LLF has been proposed is coherent. - At a macro level, the C of E is no different from our other institutions: hamstrung and unable to execute what it so grandly envisions. More reason to pray!

Auden: ‘Narcissus does not fall in love with his reflection because it is beautiful, but because it is *his*. If it were his beauty that enthralled him, he would be set free in a few years by its fading.’

This is incredibly helpful to notice. The Parable of the Good Samaritan draws deeply upon Old Testament background and is also knit into the broader structure of Luke in really smart and illuminating literary ways. I wrote a treatment of a lot of this a while back.

Spurgeon: ‘Noah was so shut in that no evil could reach him. Floods did but lift him heavenward, and winds did but waft him on his way. Outside of the ark all was ruin, but inside all was rest and peace. Without Christ we perish, but in Christ Jesus there is perfect safety.’

Happy Pentecost—God gives us His Spirit that He might dwell with and in His people forever! A good prayer for today, from Psalm 143:

We're thinking a little about how we worship the Lord as we gather—this presentation remains outstandingly helpful, years after I first watched it:

Auden: ‘Perhaps, when he wished his writings to be destroyed, Kafka foresaw the nature of too many of his admirers.’

“…you must be content, I say, to be misunderstood for a while. We are all very anxious to be understood, and it is very hard not to be. But there is one thing much more necessary." "What is that, grandmother?" "To understand other people." (George MacDonald)

Logic time - assisted dying will be delivered by private providers. Private firms thrive by expansion. Safeguards won't stop that. Meanwhile palliative care will continue to rely on charity shops?

Is your life tragic, or comic? Whether you have suffered or are suffering isn't part of the answer to that question. W.H. Auden put it like this:

Breaking: assisted suicide bill passes Third Reading 314-291 votes and will now move to the House of Lords for further scrutiny. Absolutely gutted. What a dreadful, awful and evil result. I fear for the frail and dying. The right to die will become a duty.

As warnings and red flags go, there's just not much more MPs could have asked for, or been given. A miserable result. Lord, have mercy.
