And the humility and the patience are best driven by a sure confidence in Scripture as the faithful word of God. The lazy approaches that Peter Leithart highlights overwhelmingly arise from a weak regard for Holy Scripture, leading people to be impatient with it and proud towards it.

Crucial to all this are the virtues of patience and humility. We must humbly recognize and acknowledge the limits of our knowledge. And we must be patient enough to take whatever time the text requires of us, even if we never arrive at an understanding.

These all died in faith, not having received the browser tabs promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

When I first started studying theology, Dr. John Frame was an important influence. I wrote him an email to which he sent a very gracious response, an encouragement at a critical moment in my studies. Dr Frame has been an inspiration to me and many others.

Happy Birthday!
