Hello Nat here - looking forward to questions for #AskAnArchaeologistDay! I’m at Scotney Castle today and have to ask - ‘Is this the most picturesque archaeological site?’ What are some of your favourites? #AskAnArchaeologist Day ArchaeologyUK
I have many favourites Lawrence Shaw but following Sadie Watson’s Tower Bridge view, here’s one from the Tower Beach during Open Foreshore weekend with Thames Discovery Programme in 2014 📷 by me #AskAnArchaeologist
LOVELY finds from Wimpole Estate!
Archive request! I've got a reference to (?medieval) ceramics excavated at #Bodiam which have been accessioned into the archaeology research collections at Southampton University - anyone able to find out what they are? Dominic Barker? Thanks in advance!
The River Rother flows to the south of Bodiam Castle NT & was an important highway during the #medieval period. Join our special evening tours on 4 & 14 August with Dr Al Oswald to learn more about the landscape around the castle. #Bodiam100 nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/sussex/b… National Trust South East
Our cover star for August is Bodiam Castle NT, in a late 18th century view by James Lambert, when the castle was owned by the Websters. Much of the medieval structure is ruined & there is a small house with a garden in the courtyard. nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/67575 #Bodiam100 National Trust South East
All go Bodiam Castle NT! #Bodiam100
And just like that, the first season of excavation Bodiam Castle NT for #Bodiam100 is complete! 🧵 We’ve explored eight trenches to the north and south of the castle over three weeks, chatted with thousands of visitors and spent a very enjoyable time camping on site.
It’s been a wonderful opportunity to evaluate areas that haven’t been excavated before. A huge THANK YOU to our incredible #volunteers, students & colleagues from UCL Institute of Archaeology, staff from UCL Archaeology South-East & to the property team for making us so welcome on site. #Bodiam100
Once the assessment work is complete we’ll be sharing the evaluation report on National Trust Heritage Records Online and planning will begin soon for Season 2 of #Bodiam100! Today is sadly Martin Papworth’s final day working with the National Trust, and we would like to take this opportunity to showcase some of the amazing research and work he’s undertaken in his 38 years with us. (🧵)
I discovered these wonderful marks, daisy-wheels, one with concentric circles and a trefoil too, all at St Georges Church, Brede, grade 1 listed, C13th.
