Our paper on mini-grid electrification in Indonesia is out now in ESD. Mini-grids are a beautiful technology. But the high-cost-low-demand dilemma in remote areas, the natural target group for mini-grids, makes sustainable operation challenging. authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S09…

Excited to see our paper on instrumental variables in Political Science out at Political Analysis!

In it, we look at how IVs have been used in the past and provide advice for researchers looking to use them in the future.

researchers often seeks 'tension' in papers, using phrases like 'this hypothesis is not without tension'? Does this concept appear under different phrasing in other fields? Curious to hear thoughts from those exploring meta-science!

I feel the same about the term “evidence-based”. Used so loosely, with 99% of folk claiming it not knowing what it really means

Has caused much harm/waste

The challenge is can we get to a baseline where enough can discern good use of “evidence-based” that it lessens poor use?

My co-author Jörg Ankel-Peters with a thread on our newly published paper on comments in the AER. We find that comments are not cited much & do not affect the debate around the original paper. Also, a survey with the authors of OPs & comments shows that debates are largely unsettled.

Our VoxEU column discusses how birthplaces of national leaders' spouses receive more than three times as much aid during the tenure of their partners than the same sub-national region would receive at other times. Check out our new sub-national aid data: godad.me

...and an exciting follow-up question is, of course, how many meaningful and valid comments were rejected - and why.

Would be nice to see this sort of analysis done in other disciplines. From my own experience, I perceive the private costs of writing and trying to publish comments to outweigh the private benefits. I hope work like this study will change that.
