My co-author Jörg Ankel-Peters with a thread on our newly published paper on comments in the AER. We find that comments are not cited much & do not affect the debate around the original paper. Also, a survey with the authors of OPs & comments shows that debates are largely unsettled.

Our VoxEU column discusses how birthplaces of national leaders' spouses receive more than three times as much aid during the tenure of their partners than the same sub-national region would receive at other times. Check out our new sub-national aid data: godad.me

...and an exciting follow-up question is, of course, how many meaningful and valid comments were rejected - and why.

Would be nice to see this sort of analysis done in other disciplines. From my own experience, I perceive the private costs of writing and trying to publish comments to outweigh the private benefits. I hope work like this study will change that.
