New paper! Charlotte L. DeVitre and colleagues have investigated the laser heating effect on Raman analysis of CO2 co-existing as liquid and vapor in olivine-hosted melt inclusion bubbles. Read it here 👇 doi.org/10.30909/vol.0… [Image under CC licence via Wikipedia]

Super proud of Kate Mauriohooho (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Raukawa) for defending her PhD. Kate's research on the Taupō-Maroa region have revealed the ages, geochemistry and number of magmatic systems operating between two supereruptions. Ngā mihi Dr Mauriohooho!

Our cup runneth over! The OSIRIS-REX canister was opened on Monday, Sept. 25 at Johnson Space Center. The hxxfrd curation team in Houston works as they found more material than expected in the outer canister, outside the collection head. Learn more:

Found this greatly instructive, especially in the field! Learn your mineral colors :-) Check out the page, they have many more of these useful plots. cdn1.strike-dip.com/visualizations…

Super proud of Stephen Piva for just passing his doctoral exam with flying colours and defending his PhD thesis: “Environmental and Climatic Responses to Two Large Explosive Eruptions from Taupō Volcano, New Zealand”. A huge effort and great piece of work. Well done Dr Piva!

📢In late summer ~230 AD one of the largest eruptions of the last 5000 years happened from Taupō volcano 🌋. In a just published paper led by Stephen Piva we found tiny glass shards from this event preserved in Antarctic ice. Ash found buried deep in Antarctic ice has highlighted the massive eruptive power of our best-known super-volcano - while also helping scientists refine the date of Taupō's most recent big blow nzherald.co.nz/nz/ash-buried-…

Today we carried out the 1st coring of the #TAN2315 trip. We recovered 6 cores around #Tuhua (Mayor Island), with one reaching a whopping 5.4m in length! We even spotted tephra around a few of them. Super excited for tomorrow when we get our first sneak peak into the split cores!

Preliminary glass data from the #2023svartsengi eruption! The ongoing eruption north of Hagafell, although more evolved, has a similar composition to the late erupted lavas from Fagradalsfjall. Glass MgO and K2O/TiO2 are of 6.0 wt% and 0.24, respectively.

It’s a breakthrough! The SWAIS2C  team are celebrating a major milestone. They’ve successfully melted a hole through nearly 600 m of the Ross Ice Shelf to the ocean cavity below. 📷 Veronika Meduna, borehole photo Anthony Powell AntarcticaNewZealand mtr.cool/htartxgxjz

Incredible to watch the moment magma breaks the surface like this. An incredible piece of footage: 'The beginning of the eruption at Sundhnúksgíga was caught on RÚV's webcam. Here you can see the first five minutes of the eruption in 30 seconds.' Stay safe and well-informed all
