Thomas Newcomen’s (1664-1729) engine (1712) was adopted at many coal mines but only one survives on its original site Elsecar Heritage Centre . An iron monger and Baptist preacher, he is remembered via many street names including at Doncaster, Hoyland, Hull and London. John Tanner
My interest in Elsecar Heritage Centre began in late 60s when I was a student. In early 1970s I tutored local history classes in Barnsley for WEA and Sheffield University. Summer excursions included tours of Newcomen engine, permission granted by NCB. Always remember/ John Tanner
