Snark aside, these other two screenshots are really a fascinating look into a kind of bizarre psychology in which what you do doesn’t make you what you are, but only means that you have the appearance of being that thing. So, if I help a little old lady cross the street, then I’m

Very important: schools can spend a lot of mental health money on programs taught by adults and get little benefit. Or they can spend little and get big benefits from rolling back the screen-based school day and giving more play, recess, and social interaction. Let Grow

rue🌿 Do you know anyone with a rooster and hens? We have found them to be useful teaching tools. Although, thanks to one of our frisky fowls, my son thought "mating" for humans was when the man jumped on the woman's back and bit her neck.

Today I removed a defunct sewage pump in the basement, which required bailing out, by hand, many gallons of foul, soupy effluent. A shitty job, literally and figuratively, but doing it myself saved roughly $1k in labor costs. Heck, for another $1k, I'd do it again tomorrow.

Pretty sure I saw a golden eagle last week in eastern Connecticut. There are only a handful of sightings in the state annually, most of them in October-November.

Both the most and the least effective teachers I know tend to be big critics of public education. But the best ones don't let the system's many significant problems embitter them. They stay focused on doing the best they can with their students.

I like my job, but paternity leave has underscored how much more I like being home. I've been spending my days writing, homeschooling, teaching piano, doing projects around the house, hanging out with family, and taking the occasional camping trip. Truly a blissful way to live.

Aleta Valiant Something doesn't sit right with me when I see guys way into Legos, comic books, etc. I mean, to each their own, but also, come on, man, grow up.

I had coffee yesterday with a fellow teacher. I told him I wanted my kids to have a Christian upbringing, but that, my faith having lapsed, I wasn't sure how to provide it. He suggested I pray, "Speak, Lord, your servant is listening." I think I will take him up on that advice.

The friend I had coffee with yesterday was the third person I respect—the first being a colleague and the second being 𝙷𝚒𝚌𝚔𝚖𝚊𝚗—who I've heard speak highly of the Tridentine Mass. My wife and I have decided to attend tomorrow morning for the first time.

Young people fail to understand two complementary forces: 1. The diminishing returns of all the stuff that seems fun when you’re 25 2. The increasing returns on satisfaction of having a close family At some point these two things cross.

wanye This is basically why I see breaking and entering by a stranger, generally, as sufficient grounds for the use of deadly force. It's reasonable to assume such a person is dangerous, and I shouldn't have to ascertain precisely how dangerous before defending myself and my family.

My friend took photos of a big fish die-off at one of my favorite fishing holes this past weekend. The likeliest cause seems to be drought—or contamination from a local construction company that's permitted to fill in the pond.

I am persuaded that feminization is the most portentous trend in American culture, and this is an excellent explanation of why. It is also wonderfully written. E.g., "Women can sue their bosses for running a workplace that feels like a fraternity house, but men can’t sue when
