The question everyone needs to ask is whether they would work for free as a doctor, and if they won't, where is the line at which their sense of vocation gives way to financial need. Or should medicine become the domain of those so wealthy they don't need paying?

Professor Karol Sikora Prof Sikora, if we calculated your lifetime reward package and mine, would you give back the difference to the NHS/government? That way we could each contribute the same amount of vocation to the system.

Full solidarity with our striking residents. The job is not 20% easier than it was in 2008. The nation's average salaries have recovered since then. No reason why a job this mentally and emotionally challenging deserves different. #PayRestorationNow #ResidentDoctorStrike

It’s not the BMA “undermining the trade union movement”. It’s a Labour Prime Minister, writing in the Murdoch press, urging junior doctors to break with their union leadership. That’s a direct attack on trade unionism. Solidarity with The BMA and junior doctors on strike.

How to tell if your appointment was cancelled due to a Doctors strike Answer you can’t On a average day in the NHS hospitals cancel 50,000 appts Strikes days affect 40,000 appts, apparently🤔 Blaming the Drs for a broken system is giving Management/Govt the excuse they want

Pleased to report that the night team I am currently covering have chosen to strike in their entirety, and this particular consultant can use a computer, so no significant patient safety issues. What an absolute embarrassment. Imagine working for this lot.

What most of the public probably don't know is trusts allow unsafe conditions to avoid paying the high cost of last-minute cover all the time. This is not a strike issue, this is a policy of refusal to pay the going rate.

This study finds that when a PE firm buys a hospital: -wages and jobs are cut -patient satisfaction declines -prices stay the same So everyone associated with the hospital is worse off, except for the PE owners who pocket the savings from the cuts. This is “heroic” because…?

Last night covering the strikes. Solidarity persists department-wide for our excellent residents. Meanwhile, the crash bleeps are down, so I get a crash walkie talkie tonight and I'm illogically giddy at the thought yet terrified I'm going to leave it lying around somewhere 😬

If you want an explanation for why doctors seem to have lost a lot of respect, pay and conditions over recent years, you could do worse than 'it's no longer a profession dominated by white, privately-educated men'.

Interesting post-dinner discussion this evening around ward rounds inspired by Louella Vaughan's thread from yesterday - listening to two very different generations of doctor, one of whom could not imagine a world without a firm system, and the other having never experienced this 🤔

Zohran Mamdani moved a table, Jeremy Corbyn owns a jacket, these are the kinds of "scandals" we are supposed to get mad at while billionaires take everything from all of us.

Two speakers from induction turn out to be on annual leave. Guess they didn't have to find cover for their duties beforehand, eh?
