Today is the Institute for Employment Studies annual conference. We will be using the #futureofwork hashtag if you wish to keep up to date with all our insights and themes from the day!
The IES Annual Conference is set to begin! We’ll be tweeting throughout the event – follow #futureofwork to track our commentary as we hear from Cary Cooper, nita clarke, Emma Parry, Stephen Bevan, Tony Wilson, Claire Campbell, Zofia Bajorek & more!
Organisational labour market concerns at the moment revolve around 2 main questions: How do I keep people? and How do I get people? But rising #economic #inactivity is being driven by higher worklessness due to #illhealth #futureofwork #hr Institute for Employment Studies
.Tony Wilson: we are seeing significant rises in worklessness for older people. Reasons for the large rises is primarily 'early retirement', but often not out of choice and better support is needed to bring this group back to the labour market. #futureofwork
.Tony Wilson: Vacancies are above pre-crisis levels in every industry sector that Office for National Statistics (ONS) tracks and we've got the highest rate of job-to-job moves since records began. #futureofwork
. Tony Wilson We're seeing a really significant rise in overemployment, people working more hours than they want to. Overall, this is a different crisis to the one we expected, recruitment & participation shortages are at the heart of the issue. #futureofwork
Question: Should public policy support transition in low skill sectors? Tony Wilson: Yes - but it needs to be more than apprenticeships, we need better and well designed workplace training & investment in careers services & support, especially for older workers. #futureofwork
. Emma Parry and @danlucyIES explore an approach to recruit, retain and develop the skills needed in the the future #workforce - using a scenario-based approach with a large govt department, based on a 2.5 year project undertaken by IES and Cranfield Management #futureofwork
excellent Tony Wilson as always Institute for Employment Studies annual conference, incl. great analysis shows apart from accomm/food services, no correlation between vacancies in a sector and level of pay awards. Why not employers and HR? Also raises is this a rec or skills crisis or both?
Interesting discussion Institute for Employment Studies #FutureOfWork conference. Emphasising that workforce planning is more important than ever!
IES' joy williams looks at how young people have been impacted in the labour market during the pandemic. #futureofwork
. joy williams: in the early days of the pandemic it really was an unequal crisis. Read our research report here: bit.ly/3vnef7S #futureofwork
. joy williams: lack of relevant work experience is a barrier to good quality work, as reported by just under three quarters of young people surveyed. #futureofwork
And now to #hybrid working! nita clarke, Zofia Bajorek, Philippa Bonay from Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Tim Parkin from UK House of Commons discuss their experiences of researching & implementing hybrid working and consider if hybrid has changed many workplaces forever. #futureofwork
.nita clarke: There's a lot of mixed messages about how hybrid should work - but the clock isn't being turned back, with IES research suggesting 7 out of 10 people wanting to remain working in a hybrid pattern. #futureofwork
In his latest blog, IES' @danlucyIES considers five key planning priorities that could help #HR to prepare for the economic #downturn. Read: bit.ly/3Q0hx8g
