As an educator, I fear for our profession. As a parent I worry who will teach my children. While there are a lot of armchair quarterbacks in the various 'open school' and 'learning loss' movements, I have seen almost zero talk about caring for teachers. npr.org/2021/04/19/988…

My wife, who works at our local Catholic school, was asked by a parent if the school intended to teach Critical Race Theory. She replied "explain to me what it is and I'll tell you if we teach it." The parent had no reply.

Not once have I heard a politician or news pundit ask “How are teachers and school staff doing? And what can we do to help them?” You would think if you keep saying how society, economy and children are depending on teachers and schools, you would consider asking that question.

I’m seeing some of these requests and the I’m wondering what does the school provide?! Oh my goodness!! Teachers shouldn’t have to ask for books and supplies for classes. What am I not getting here? How did it get this bad? Like these are our kids we sending to school.

Compliance is not engagement. And a school system or a classroom focused on compliance rather than engagement nurtures acquiescence rather than curiosity and intelligence.

Elementary students should not be taking standardized tests because testing becomes the focus of education instead of learning. We take away their creative genius and excitement of learning, playing, & creating. We develop test takers instead of problem solvers and innovators.

Some students go an entire day at school without anyone saying their name. Be the adult who speaks to each student by name. Everyone loves to hear their name.

When our grading system creates a mental purgatory between crippling fear of failure and obsessive quest for perfection… we’ve lost the plot. Instead, what if our grading system could increase positive risk-taking, self-awareness and well-being? It’s possible.

A literacy curriculum program can either be: • A script that teachers cannot deviate from, or • A resource that supports responsive instruction. The difference is whether leaders support teachers and trust them as professionals.
