Here's a rather stunning visualization shared during today's Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative conference on #roadecology, via Tom Martin of Montana DOT — a young grizzly bear attempting, and nearly always failing, to cross I-90. Each X is a highway approach. About as permeable as the Berlin Wall.

A study in the U.S. (Cunningham, C. X. et al. 2022) showed that there was a 16% increase in deer-vehicle collisions the week after the fall time change. Fall is already a peak time for wildlife vehicle collisions, so be sure to drive with caution and watch for wildlife on roads!

When COVID-19 restrictions nearly grounded heli-skiing in B.C., some at-risk caribou populations nearly doubled their home-range, a new study has found. Beyond habitat destruction, human presence alone can affect how the wildlife use their environment. nsnews.com/highlights/pan…

youtube.com/watch?v=R_osQm… Roads are everywhere, but roadkill doesn't have to be. A pleasure working with The CCPC and all interviewees on this video!

Most of us will have seen images of crossing structures like this by now. They’re becoming popular all over the world, for everything from crabs to cougars. But how well do they actually work? Do they mitigate the barrier effect of roads on wildlife movement? 🧵

What do you get when you cross one of the country’s fastest-growing marine shipping regions with critical habitat? A very high-risk environment to marine species — one that is too crowded and too contaminated for whales to thrive long-term.

In February we lost our dear friend and colleague, Aisha Uduman, to a rare form of brain cancer (diffuse midline glioma). Aisha was a wonderful human and inspired so many of us in so many ways. 1/5

Tragic news. Remember that dozens of unnamed grizzly bears and thousands of ungulates also die as roadkill each year. Solutions for high collision zones exist, and they are cheaper than doing nothing. It’s a no brainer.
