Sadly not surprised at devastating Education Policy Institute stats today. The gap was already widening before the pandemic + levels of child poverty continue to rise. Reversing this trend is possible, schools have done it before, but we must also have action on the root causes of poverty.

According to this research only 5% of girls and young women in the UK feel completely safe in public spaces, while almost half believe they do not have the same educational and employment opportunities as boys and young men of the same age. WE. MUST. DO. BETTER.

These discussions sound fascinating. Lots to think about in this: "The shift from transactional engagement to relational engagement... I believe it is the basis of a new social contract not just with our colleagues in the organisations we lead, but also with pupils & parents"

Great to hear this important research on the talented teachers we are missing from our classrooms on BBC Radio 4 Today plus some practical ways you can offer teachers who are also parents flexibility.

A powerful vision beautifully expressed by Mufti Hamid on the difference education can make to our society in these troubled times. "Our schools are also drivers for change, the pioneers of a better future, and the hope of a more peaceful, more caring world."

This is the only misstep I’ve seen Phillipson make so far. There is no way colleges can wait until Jan to find out if they can offer BTECs next September. Open evenings are this term! Ads need designing, staff sorting! And crucially: this would never happen to A-Levels.

Resolving this situation really matters. Have the government created the conditions to do this effectively and will the sector have enough time to respond to the outcome?

A £2.3-billion boost to the core schools budget in 2025-26 will see per-pupil spending in England rise by 1.6%, putting resources above their 2010 level for the first time. That follows a similar rise in per-pupil spending last year. [THREAD: 1/3]

But schools also face big & rising costs. Special needs funding will rise by £1bn next year (or 6%) but numbers have been rising faster than that. The 5.5% pay rise for teachers agreed from Sept 2024 will cost ~£450m. That leaves about £850m for other costs & priorities. [2/3]
