One thing that would improve the UK productivity crisis is eliminating the billions of person-hours spent compiling receipts for business travel expenses and moving to a per diem system like sensible countries

The riots represent a moment of choice for post-Brexit Britain. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. I wasn't going to post in August, but in view of events: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2024/08/the-ri…

This is amazing (and what Twitter used to be like): A normal guy has spent 30 years with his mates refusing to believe that he briefly saw Dave Grohl in the middle of nowhere in Kerry while wearing a Nirvana t-shirt

It would be necessary for every single private company on earth to go bust too if they were never allowed to raise their prices to keep up with inflation

It should be illegal to publish the football league tables until after the sixth game of the season, like in the olden days

A youth mobility deal is obviously discriminatory, but that could be its biggest selling point for frustrated Rejoiners As soon as young people can move freely around the EU again, everyone else will suddenly start asking why on earth they can't enjoy the same benefits too

Worth remembering that none of the painful choices required to fill a putative £22bn black hole would be necessary if we were in the European Single Market and tax receipts were £40bn higher (and the economy £100bn+ bigger)

There are 210,000 people at Glastonbury - a city the size of Reading or Portsmouth - so this sounds like a pretty quiet weekend in terms of crime England & Wales has 900,000 instances of violence annually: so Glastonbury's prevalence rate is *half* that of the country at large

So much progress in university-level assessment over the past 20 years is going to be completely wound back soon - with students crammed once more into dreary exam halls - if we don't do something about Artificial Intelligence

Stop talking about "reversing Brexit": it's logically impossible, antagonistic and backward looking to a past that is gone Start talking about joining (not even "re-joining") the EU: an entirely new, positive, forward-looking endeavour that requires consensus about the future

This can't be said often enough: you're either in the EU institutions or you're a Third Country. There isn't really a spectrum of options. Even the Barnier staircase was half a dozen similarly shitty forms of hard Brexit vs soft Brexit/membership. The gap between them is vast.

RIP Sir Shridath "Sonny" Ramphal: we've lost an absolutely giant of 20th Century global diplomacy today I was fortunate to meet him once, at his house in Barbados, where we chatted politics for an afternoon: an incredibly humble man for someone who was so staggeringly impressive

Instead of convoluted PSR rules generating perverse outcomes, we should learn from US draft system Win Premier League? 1 signing for 2 windows Top four? 2 signings for 2 windows Everyone else: sign who you like Simpler, rebalances competition, stops elite stockpiling players

Added to the Winter Fuel Allowance situation, it's genuinely baffling to me that Labour are actively trying to alienate the exact voters who gave them their wafer-thin majorities in hundreds of constituencies they don't normally win
