It certainly was a lot of fun, always warm with each other but willing to debate based on evidence - and listening carefully with a willingness to change one's mind.

In 2016 and again in 2020 Mark Jaccard wrote about well designed performance-based regulation being almost as efficient but far more politically robust but he was pilloried by carbon tax purists. theglobeandmail.com/arts/books/art…

Nice to see G&M recognize my predictions of current c-tax challenges and highlight econ-efficient flex-reg policies that while politically difficult, are far less so than c-tax. See link in article to my 2018 op-ed. The Globe and Mail theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editor…

I’ll be speaking at 'Building Momentum Toward #NetZero', about how policies can decarbonize, expand, and modernize the grid to provide clean, affordable, and reliable electricity to Canadians. #cdnpoli See link for info. eventbrite.com/e/building-mom…

Canadian carbon pricing is not dead Energy/climate economist Mark Jaccard talks about Atlantic heating oil tempest in a teapot, "flex regs," carbon taxes and oil/gas, etc. #ABleg #cdnpoli #OOTT share.transistor.fm/s/c93d5393

Mark Jaccard (@markjaccard) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I don't remember saying "carbon pricing is not dead". I was avoiding forecasts about future policy and simply explaining policy options and policy history. I also don't remember saying "tempest in a teapot" but perhaps I did.

Mark Jaccard (@markjaccard) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I appreciate people like Max pointing out I predicted this and was ignored. (Of course, not fun being correct on this critical issue for humanity.) All climate policy is difficult, but difficulty much lower for flex-regs (ZEV, CER, etc) that visualize an attainable outcome.

Mark Jaccard (@markjaccard) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I don't have a favourite policy. But in ch8 of Sustainable Fossil Fuels (2005) I explained niche market regs (I now call flex-regs) and noted their better political feasibility and medium performance on econ effic. Hence my warnings on c-tax of Campbell, Notley, Dion, etc.

I feel very honoured to be selected for this award. It is deeply touching to feel that I could make a positive impact on my trainees. I feel fortunate to have worked with such great people, and to continue to have the privilege of supervising the next generation of students.

Sean Speer A good contribution from the Hub would be to see if you can get anyone close to team Poilievre to write something in support of industrial carbon pricing. Or regs. Or Jaccardian hybrids. It would focus the discussion on consumer price vs not instead of action vs inaction.

New The Globe and Mail op-ed: I argue Capital Power pausing its large CCS project illustrates we don't yet have the right policy incentives for low-carbon investment. What's needed? Standardized carbon contracts for difference, led by the feds w/ prov support. theglobeandmail.com/business/comme…

Our recent study on building electrification in a net zero future finds limited impact on Ontario electricity rates despite higher electrification. We report load factors (ratio of average to peak load) - a determinant of electricity rates and a measure of the load curve shape.

Progress is being made to reach Canada's 2030 target, with current and proposed policies delivering 85 to 90 per cent of the target. But deep emissions reductions require quick and effective policy implementation. #cdnpoli climateinstitute.ca/reports/2030-e…

The first Clean Fuel Regulations compliance report has been released – even we are surprised by how closely 2023 credit prices are aligned with Navius’ latest CFR market outlook. Our forecasted 2023 price was $115/tCO2e and the reported average price was $127/t!
