1476 was the first forest law in Venice to maintain wood for ship building and keeping soil on the hill so it wouldn’t flow down to the lagoon and lead to flooding of the city.

1638 each page has a description of the forest area and a list of trees to be cut and which not to cut so you can calculate how much wood be produced from the area. The writing lists the company that will do the cutting. And the boscollora to do the work. @iufro

For moving logs they took the roads in red made for hauling down to the lake and floated the logs to Venice. @iuofro

Toured the #beech forest in the Caniglio in the Veneto region of Italy. It’s has been managed since at least the 1500’s! They harvest it on a plan

At the Consiglio forest. Venetians used 16 types of wood in their boats. Spruce for the masts, oak for the keel and beech for the oars. Same forest types and areas for the last 500 years. @iufro

3000 rafts of logs were floated to Venice a year from this forest. They were pulled to small streams then to larger ones and floated downstream to the sea. Many churches were on the way so the workers could pray to survive the trip since it was very dangerous. @iufro

It took 5 days to float the logs to Venice. Each team took the log rafts for a day and then went back and got the next raft. Thieves preyed on them to steal the wood. If caught wood thieves were sentenced to 18 months of rowing boats for the republic. @iufro

The new EU law on wood imports could have a hugely detrimental affect on US #hardwood #Lumber, if interpreted the wrong way. Panel discussion, #SAF2023 American Hardwoods National Hardwood Lumber Association & National AHEC are working on this issue.
