Tahoe now has 72 Fire Adapted Community neighborhoods and 34 Firewise communities, with 6 more seeking recognition. “There's a lot of steps that communities need to take to become Firewise. You have to keep people talking, learning, and taking action.” ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore…

Fun facts at the New Zealand national museum in Wellington. 93% of plant species in the country are exotic. There is evidence of some prescribed burning by Māori for promotion of bracken fern as a food source. They fired it off every three years to rejuvenate it the roots.

JJ here says “radiata is a damn good tree”. His great grandfather planted the first pines. all the landholders have shares in the forest management enterprise & access to forestry jobs. This load is blowdown from hurricane Adrian and at least 25 years old, & going through china.

Checking out the nicely primed radiata pine near Taupo. That’s some amazing growth and length between nodes.

By car and train and plane to New Zealand today. Here’s the stairs at our hostel in Auckland. Looking forward to seeing our N American Monterey pine and how it gets so big here as a radiate pine.

This doesn’t surprise any of us who live in ski towns. Risks from downhill skiing are high. May I suggest a nice inexpensive low octane Nordic ski instead? Accidents are surging on California ski slopes. How GoPros and gummies play in that latimes.com/california/sto…

Saw my first ‘descent’ of woodpeckers here in Oakhurst this morning. Only managed to catch two hanging out in this pic. I’m here today to talk with landowners about managing their forest lands and teach field skills including inventory and mapping. Thanks to our coord Kim Ingram

Nice but I wish they had talked about site prep. You can’t just plop a seedling into the ground with burnt dead wood everywhere. You need to reduce these fuels and then manage competing vegetation. There’s a whole ecosystem of work that needs to be done. nytimes.com/2024/04/04/hea…
