The healthcare system is designed to treat disease.

People are not just vessels for pathology.

Imagine if the system were designed around our shared humanity.

Thank you for sharing. As a neurourologist I see this. Going home after a medical event can leave people on their own navigating recovery.

Experiencing a cardiac event can be traumatic, leaving patients & co-survivors feeling helpless. Healthcare providers need to offer support beyond the diagnosis to mitigate post-traumatic stress & improve quality of life.

Coolcmsc Dr. Glaucomflecken Thank you for sharing that. When I sit down with folks after, I have had Physicians and Nurses impacted just the same. The environment is different, the situation is raw and it presents itself in a different way. Lady Glaucomflecken (she/her) describes it best as a process with 3 elements.

Four steps to empower co-survivors and facilitate meaningful care:

1. Make eye contact
2. Ask us how we are doing
3. Validate our experience
4. Provide us with written information

I want to say, ‘what do I consume…cardiac death?’ I am not a patient and I am not a consumer, but still someone deeply affected by cardiac arrest who wants to contribute my voice and make a difference.'

Why the name “Co-Survivor” matters:

- Names have power.
- Once you name it, people can understand it.
- You can convey what it's like.
- You can show why it's important.
- You can find others like you.

My biggest hope is as clinicians, you will incorporate the “Explain-Name-Validate” framework into your interactions with patients and their families and teach it to your colleagues and students.

Don’t leave CPR lay responders to process their experience on their own.

Explain what happened:
Why did _ happen? Why did the person do _?
Will they be okay? What happens to them now?
What happens to me now? What do I do?
