Right now my heart is with George Floyd’s daughter and with his family, and with many others. I want so badly for things to change. Justice must be a reality for people who haven’t ever known it. #BlackLivesMatter
My life experiences give me hope for the future. If an Indigenous woman from humble beginnings can be confirmed as Secretary of the US Department of the Interior, our country and its promise still holds true for everyone.
When Senator Mazie Hirono asked why I want to serve as US Department of the Interior Secretary, I shared what my dear friend Albert Shirley, who doesn't have electricity, told me. I carry a profound sense of service with me & will fight for everyone so future generations can thrive in our beautiful country.
Interior Sec. nominee Deb Haaland: 'This is all of our country, this is our mother. You've heard the earth referred to as mother earth. It’s difficult to not feel obligated to protect this land, and I feel that every Indigenous person in this country understands that.'
