Straight to Iceland, ESCADINHAS?
For this #whimbrel , it would be a first. In spring 2022 it aborted northward migration across Atlantic Ocean north of Canaries. In 2023 it remained in Norway for the summer. Individual #shorebirds revealing their secrets: globalflywaynetwork.org/tracks/species…
Bruce Taylor Winds have been against migrating flocks of Whimbrel for most of the journey from West Africa. Not surprised some need to refuel.

Solid descriptive #ecology and #naturalhistory is the basis of scientific insight. In ARDEA_journal, Ana Coelho et al document the seasonal changes in #diet of the #shorebirds of the #Bijagós archipelago in Guinea-Bissau. Who do several species change diet during fuelling?
Derek Julian Cornwall Birds Bird Southwest Adrian Langdon Bob Bosisto Peter Roseveare BirdGuides derek dennis Agreed. The northwards migration of Whimbrel (from west Africa) occurs in a remarkably short window.

Mixed feelings! Great that people engage in wildlife, but more Blue & Great Tits than other species combined, boosted by feeders.
Marsh Tits fast declining in Hunts, Willow Tits extinct. We've created landscape full of dominant competitor Blue/Great Tits: britishbirds.co.uk/content/rethin…

Is this (finally) the last nail in Montijo Airport's coffin? Yday we learnt in the evening news (📰&📺) that PT's Env agency has not renewed the license it issued in 2020. It argues new evidence has been presented since, explicitly stating our btg paper lead by Josh Nightingale | Global Wader

Persistence is the mother of all success. Finally managed to read Whimbrel WN/GR, ringed by the Eco Flyway team at a nearby high-tide roost.
In the background you hear the local 'amolador' blowing his whistle to advertise his tool-sharpening services to the people of Alcochete.
As the tide receded this morning a handsome flock of 36 Whimbrel took a break from foraging. Among them were three individuals colour-ringed by the Eco Flyway crew.
If eponyms were still a thing, I'd be tempted to call these 'Camilo's Curlew'. 😉 Camilo Carneiro
Delighted to have Wouter Vansteelant with us Eco Flyway for the next week and a half. Maintaining our #colaborative links with 'sister team' BirdEyes Global Flyway Network requieres regular tlc. Thank u for taking the time to visit! Busy day at the office..
