This quiet Tree Pipit and a Spotted Fly were the last additions to my Sneekermeer year list bf leaving to US for a week. Now at 156 species <5km from home; just 2 shy of my 158 total in 2023. Should reach 160+ wt a few more 'regular' birds by summer. Then it'll get real hard.

Two Spoon-billed Sandpipers tagged in Thailand last month safely reached Eastern China - they stopped at multiple coastal sites. Their journeys once again underscore the crucial role of interconnected coastal wetlands in conserving endangered species along Asian flyways. Spoon-billed Sandpiper Task Force

One of the Bluethroats at Griene Dyk stands out among the rest, sporting a thick white eyebrow on the left, and some red at the bottom of the white star. A cyanecula x svecica hybrid? Bird is ringed too. Has a talent for imitating Bearded Reedling.

To everyone who’s still not quite sure what is happening in 🇬🇪 right now, and why the events unfolding on the ground are truly unprecedented, or why the struggles of the Georgian people should even matter to those in Western capitals, here’s a (belated) not-so-short recap 🧵

Considering how much bird biomass moves through the air every autumn and spring, one would expect some aerial hunters to learn to exploit that resource. This case of a bird-eating nightjar is at least as impressive as the bird-eating bats from Spain.

Not quite the numbers I saw yesterday. And about half an hour later. Nevertheless, 500+ Whimbrel heading to roost over Blaugerzen so far this evening, and quite a few landing here. Here's what it sounds like when they come overhead. Bubbling with excitement!

Whimbrel flying towards the setting sun. One flock of a total of 800 birds (very conservative estimate) that flew over Blaugerzen this evening. Undoubtably on their way to roost after a hard day's foraging on the peaty soils around Sneekermeer. Incredible numbers.

The spring soundscape of Snitser Mar is almost complete now that most of the warblers are back on territory or passing through, like this Grasshopper Warbler, Nightingale & Sedge Warbler. 🥰

Now to get some audio wtout honking geese or hard wind. Not an easy task here ... 😅

Nice to spend some time with this confiding flock of Whimbrel, for once foraging on extensive pasture rather than ryegrass or corn stubble. In 10 days or so from now most will have continued on northward.

Hey NCV5! 🤗 Great to see this guy is still/again at Griene Dyk, looking absolutely regal, three weeks since I last saw him.

This sound 🥰. Wonderful songbird day around Sneekermeer. Lots of Common and Lesser Whitethroat, this Nightingale, first-of-year Garden Warbler and Cuckoo. A mystery Hippolais that refuses to sing or call. Muy entertaining...
