I had the privilege of giving a talk to an enthusiastic group of astronomers at CMHASD 💫. We had thoughtful questions about the relations between barred galaxies, their metallicity, and their dark matter distribution.

A great two days building relationships with researchers from a broad range of disciplines. Paul Stafford shared the concepts of effectuation and provided us with the resources to reflect on our personal motivators and skill set. Very proud of the group for winning ✨

I'm thrilled to have received first place in the Durham Researcher Poster Competition 2023😁 The purpose of the competition was to communicate your research to non-specialists, which was a fun and refreshing task. I also really enjoyed viewing posters from many other disciplines.

A very successful week in #Granada at #galbars23!! Some very exciting work happening in the bar space and it was great to have most of the Durham galaxy dynamics group together. I received very encouraging praise for my first talk at a conference 🎉

A special week in the life of an astrophysicist: great memories from Dr Becky Smethurst at the #galbars23 conference in Granada 😍 galactic bars are the best!! youtu.be/t8HPczb2v1E

Bars in disc galaxies are abundant in the local Universe but decrease with redshift. For the first time, we observed the fraction of bars in disc galaxies beyond redshift 2 using JWST and found the fraction to be 3 times greater than the HST bar fraction. arxiv.org/abs/2309.10038

Our paper on the optical morphologies of galaxies up to z~6.5 through visual classifications in CEERS is now published in ApJ. The NIR/IR JWST capabilities reveal that the structure of these galaxies have a lot in common to the ones in our local universe.

This month I was invited to join a colleague in La Palma for an observation trip. A surreal and extraordinary experience with the bonus of some clear nights to get some spectroscopic data of barred galaxies using the Isaac Newton Telescope 🪐 #INT #astronomy #observatory
