A few months ago, I chatted with the lady behind me in a slow moving grocery line. I asked whether she had children, and she paused before telling me she had a son who died via suicide after being abused at a behavioral modification school: Carlbrook school in Virginia. /1

She had a similar story to what I was investigating at Kanakuk Kamps (and I'd just watched Paris Hilton's documentary about her time at a boarding school). But now, a memoir dropped by Elizabeth Gilpin, who attended Carlbrook – the very school to which my neighbor sent her son. /2

In the book, Gilpin mentions some of her friends died via suicide because of the abuse there. Gilpin was at Carlbrook the same time as my neighbor’s son, Joe Benton Burns (who attended 2001-04 approximately). /3
