There was a war in Ethiopia's Tigray region from 2020 - 2022. It was one of the most egregiously under-reported conflicts in modern history. Yes, there was a comms blackout. Yes, access was difficult. But I think racism also played a part. Just another African war. Who cares?

A new report now says that the brutal sexual violence carried out against women and (often extremely young) girls by Ethiopian and Eritrean troops may amount to genocide. The evidence is horribly compelling.

[Trigger warning for extreme sexual violence]: After rapes, the soldiers often inserted things into women's vaginas, including metal screws and stones. In at least two cases, plastic-wrapped letters declaring intent to destroy Tigrayan women's ability to give birth were inserted

Survivors say soldiers openly said they wanted to wipe out the Tigrayan ethnicity by destroying reproductive organs or by raping the women so they would give birth to children of another ethnicity.

Payal Shah, co-author of the report, told the Guardian: “Having worked on gender-based violence for two decades … this is not something I have ever seen in other conflicts. It is a really horrific and extreme form of sexual violence, and one that deserves the world’s attention”

Most of the information in this thread was taken from a Guardian article on the report by Tessa McLure. Here's the piece: theguardian.com/global-develop…

The barbarity detailed in this report is nearly impossible to comprehend. Below, a story about Eritrean forces who broke a girl’s arm while attempting to remove her contraception. To even speak of reconciliation without justice and accountability for victims & survivors…

It is an old story but one whose time to be re-told has long been overdue. And in the re-telling, the horror with fresh details remains unmitigated, as if it is but yesterday. #Tigray #Ethiopia #Eritrea

Much of what the Trump administration has demanded, Columbia has conceded – though they insist otherwise. Meghnad Bose and I tracked months of govt demands and secretive Columbia rule changes, for The Intercept. theintercept.com/2025/08/07/col…

Been hearing A LOT of LLM-psychopherapy pitches lately. I can't stress highly enough just how bad this idea is but I am so greatfull to @timnitGebru (@dair-community.social/bsky.social) and the team for their Stochastic Parrots article back from 2021 so I will quote it here again & again. dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/34…

Harvard faculty were retweeting this dude when he said he had put students on a list for being against this live-streamed genocide. He deposed the president on “plagiarism” lies because she didn’t punish students protesting this genocide enough. You reap what you sow.
