Pinda gently suggested that our rare Gulag map isn't quite the #LondonMapFair vibe we're after. This is less bleak, a detail from Bacon's Pictorial Map of London from 1924, a century ago. A recommended sightseeing tour marked in red ends outside Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). londonmapfairs.com

Our 1942 British escape map of North Africa was concealed inside a khaki drill tropical uniform belt, in case the wearer was captured. It was printed on rayon by games manufacturer John Waddington Ltd for MI9. At this weekend's londonmapfairs.com #LondonMapFair, 15-16 June.

Edward VIII maps we'll bring to this weekend's #LondonMapFair Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). The Oxo map shows the route of the abandoned coronation. The British Empire map was published in the Boston Advertiser in March 1936, before Edward's relationship with Wallis Simpson became widely known.

There's something restful about greeting pigeon man at St Giles's on my way home in the evening. I don't think I could join him, but everyone seems content. I don't know his name - I just address him as 'sir' - and I did ask if I could take a snap tonight.
