Greasewood (Sarcobatus vermiculatus) shrubs on undisturbed sand dunes, Big Smoky Valley west of Tonopah, Nevada. The landscape in the distance is proposed for utility-scale solar development for the Esmeralda 7 Solar project. Why not on urban parking lot shade canopies first???

If we fill valleys like this with industrial solar, we destroy them forever. These are not wastelands. If you lack the taste to appreciate them, stay in your cities. But let these places be.

BLM's Western Solar Plan is not a balanced clean energy approach. It's a sacrifice of remarkable desert lands that'll fuel the fire of the extinction crisis. Canals, rooftops, parking lots, phased-out alfalfa fields--cover all that w panels before you blade our precious deserts.

This bristlecone pine may have been perched on this spot, overlooking an open valley of sagebrush, juniper, grouse, pronghorn antelope, wolves, rattlesnakes, and deer for 4,000 years. Are we now going to bulldoze all that for industrial solar, with panels that will last 25 years?

No surprise that the solar developer that is bulldozing 4,200 Joshua trees off the Aratina Solar Project in Boron, CA requested that the BLM Western Solar Plan remove "Occupied habitat for threatened and endangered species" from exclusion to solar development in 11 states.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
