In the summer of 1848, barely a year after Mormon pioneers set foot in Utah, brothers Sanford and Thomas Bingham were sent by Brigham Young to tend cattle in the Oquirrh Mountains. As their herd grazed in a canyon, the brothers spotted copper ore gleaming across the rocky slopes.

The pioneers who crossed the plains early in the season planted seeds at places along the trail to provide for those who would cross later. They sowed for others to reap. In the same way, their legacy is not for their descendants alone. Go, and do thou likewise.
