I’d be more successful if I didn’t spend so much time hunting. But then what’s the point.

Being comfortable in the wilderness is about having confidence you can handle situations as they come up. No one starts out comfortable with the unknown, it grows slowly over time. You don't get courage ,and do the thing. You do the thing, and then get the courage.

Why a mentor is important. You could watch videos, listen to podcast, and learn something like elk hunting. However the lack of a feedback loop means you will progress slowly over years. A mentor shortens the loop, they can point out tweaks and pivots in your game.

Make the call. These days people are damn near scared to pick up a phone. Often times the answer you seek for a year is merely 4-5 phone calls away. Sometimes doing the hard thing is really not that hard, you just put it off for fear of looking dumb.

What you work on is far more important than just how hard you work. Line cooks work really hard, yet I don't see many going on sheep hunts. Let's use a hunting example: 👇

A great guide doesn't try to account for every possible thing that could ever happen on a wilderness trip. They have the enough tools, confidence, and skills that no matter what happens they will find a way work through it.
