1980: The DSM-III (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) listed autism as a distinct diagnosis for the first time. Before that, children with autism were often misdiagnosed with childhood schizophrenia, intellectual disability, or psychotic disorders.

So Autism entered the DSM in 1980, awareness campaigns were launched in 1988, and RFK Jr. wonders why diagnosis went up starting in 1989?
