Aug 1, 1879, Mary Eliza Mahoney graduated from the New England Hospital for Women and Children. She was the 1st trained Black nurse. Out of a class of 40, she was 1 of 3 who successfully completed the program. From 1879 to 1951, this program only graduated 6 other Black nurses.
