Our museum collection has lots of mammoth teeth. Why? Join UNSM paleontologist Jeremy McMullin in this month's #ArchwaytoScience video as he explains variation & why museum collections have multiple versions of the same fossil. #MuseumMonday youtu.be/qTOEArCQ4E0

Check out this amazing fossilized tree stump that we collected from north-central Nebraska! It's over 15 ft. in circumference and 6+ ft. in diameter. It's from a time when Nebraska was a more forested environment (~15 mya). It was so cool to help with this project!#FossilFriday

In 1962, UNSM students found two complete mammoth skeletons. Each had a broken tusk on opposite sides. During the musth, these bulls in their prime battled to the death for mating rights. The Clash of the Mammoths is at Trailside Museum at Fort Robinson State Park. #FossilFriday

There are many swords within the UNSM collections, but this one is unique in that it is sheathed in crocodile skin. The sword, likely collected from the Nuer people of Sudan, also features a crocodile design cut into the metal of the blade. #AnthroThursday

This is your semi-annual reminder that these frigid polar vortex bomb cyclones happen BECAUSE of global warming! Hot N Pacific water pushes the arctic circle air down onto the US, let’s take action. #ClimateAction #ClimateCrisis

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime find,” said Jonathan Bloch, curator of vertebrate paleontology here at the Florida Museum. “It’s the most complete gomphothere skeleton from this time period in Florida and among the best in North America.” floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/paleon…

I am stunned at Ben & Jerry's post about Land Back and returning the Black Hills. Usually even the most “progressive” brands will only offer lukewarm land acknowledgments and stop there. Seeing a company this big tell the real truth using this language evokes so many emotions.

This gorgeous new BBC chart shows how the coldest days on Earth now are warmer than the hottest days before the 1980s. You know who predicted this would happen with near-perfect precision? Exxon Mobil scientists, in an internal report in 1982. Two versions of the same chart:

You broke up. She wanted a relationship with better communication or something like that (you don't know, you weren't listening) All that remains of the okayest 6 months of your life is Rafael, the goldfish. You hate Rafael.

Imagine a world where rodents have horns - that's our world ~6 million years ago. A real Miocene oddity, the burrowing Ceratogaulus. Check out those digging claws! This specimen American Museum of Natural History; specimens also on display Smithsonian NMNH and Morrill Hall (UNSM) #FossilFriday
