First a throwback, to time where the Arawak & Taínos people lived on the island & then Christopher Columbus posted up in 1494 and started the long lasting fallacy that he had ‘discovered’ the ‘New World.’ He claimed Jamaica for the ‘Crown of Castile’ which was a Spanish state.

My office is in Croydon and we had a similar meeting yesterday and I was sitting there so mentally absent because I cannot believe these are the meetings we’re having to have in this day and age. Complete and utter insanity.

These riots started in Parliament. Rioters chant “stop the boats” and “we want our country back” - using language from politicians across the political spectrum. It’s not enough to call out violence, politicians need to stop normalising hate. In policy and practice.

Day 22 of #SouthAsianHeritageMonth Just like today, 42 years ago South Asian communities were defending themselves against racist attacks…through the joint action of many different groups (under the umbrella term “Politically Black”), people were united against the fascists

A mantra: “Everything that was demonized about the African—the enslaved African—was highlighted. Black was seen as the devil. Black was bad, substandard. So we got even blacker.” 🖤

From next month, I’ll continue my doctoral research on the politics of complexion as the Justin Champion Fellow at Institute of Historical Research. I’m delighted to be awarded this fellowship, particularly because it was donated in honour of a wonderful professor who I sadly never got to meet…

Last week Thursday we looked at the Haitian Revolution and how this revolution ultimately won them their independence! Today, marks the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act which was passed in the UK in 1833.
