This is why arguments that we need wind and solar to meet rising electricity demand are nonsense. You can install a lot of capacity and get very little for it.

Cy McGeady IMM's state of the market reports on PJM have the numbers, for e.g see table below for 2024. I think the table is in more or less the same place every year or at least the same title so easy to find for other years too monitoringanalytics.com/reports/PJM_St…

PJM's Capacity Auction (BRA) for 2026/2027 just cleared at the cap for the entire market. This comes on the heel of Google's recent procurement of hydropower capacity in PJM, signaling no end to Big Tech's insatiable demand for datacenter power.

Isn't this the one that you can outsource the emissions to a non participating state? Not sure about the specifics but I've heard this criticism of it!

Let's take a look at PJM Interconnection's capacity auction, shall we? This market is tighter than a pair of skinny jeans. Only 17 MWs of capacity [solar, it would seem] was offered but did not clear (out of 134,205 MWs). 🧵

A report by pro-renewable E2 finds that $22 billion in "clean" energy projects were entirely dependent on tax dollars. Without that ongoing public funding, the study finds, these projects are being canceled. Link below.
